11.1 is a solo performance for the whistling voice, & resonances, field recordings, a string instrument, cymbals, rice, lentils, improvisations, the current soundscape, drums, transducers, mung beans, bulgur, cans, paper, bottles.

it’s a research on whistling techniques described in the ancient chinese text “the principles of whistling” (嘯旨).

the core of the work is a slow breathing which consciously executes its

  1. ↑ inhale,
  2. ↓ exhale &
  3. 𝄐 retention.

the function of breathing is to tune into the body. once attuned to the body, the breath can materialise and transform into whistling. whistling encompasses a wide range of possibilities: bilabial & labial whistling, with & without the tongue, concurrent singing-whistling, the whistling of dyads.

the whistling tunes into a resonant system & once tuned in, the resonant system reacts by resonating. this system is composed of digital filters that start to ring as soon as the whistling signal matches their frequency, of transducers attached to metal plates that start to vibrate & which vibration causes mung beans or rice to fall from metal plates, of field recordings that start to become audible.
