~ / works / 10.3
10.3 offers a collective musical practice for the duration of a week. it aims to create a space for a shared mourning: a lament of decay, death & loss.
the piece encourages this activity through books & three loudspeakers. a book consists of two pages for each day of a week: on the left page is the english translation of a sappho poem. on the right page is a musical notation.
the sappho poems embody the experiences of decay & loss in two ways: firstly through their actual content & then through their fragmentary form which, documents the loss of her poetry over time. each page lasts ~30 minutes.

the loudspeakers play sine tones & white noise. they colorize the space & its atmosphere; they separate the before & after of the activity; they open & close the mourning.
the musical practice is mainly framed by changing sets of pitches. they can either be read from the notation or simply taken over by the loudspeakers or fellow players. the activity is therefore open to anyone willing to join: by playing any instrument a person brings from their life, by chanting or whistling, by singing or reading, by merely listening in a participating & engaged presence.
