kagem karina is a concert piece for string trio, keyboard & radios. it deals with a reading of culture as a rhizomatic structure & disruptions or misinterpretations in cultural exchange.
this reflection is worked out concretely on the relationship between javanese & european music (a relationship with a rich history of misunderstandings & appropriations). is it possible to grasp structures in depth instead of imitating surfaces? how can culture develop without ignoring the existence and richness of the other nor appropriating it violently and superficially? is there still any distinct culture at all or has everything become one unifying “hyperculture” (byung-chul han)?
