11.3 creates a situation that invites everyone in a room to whistle, play and hum together. essentially, it is a situation in which the participants become resonances of each other & their environment. it offers a practice of tuning into the world.

this situation is created by providing self-playing instruments,
books that act as scores, and objects such as cans or cymbals that are
transformed into musical instruments for the participants.
each self-playing instrument has three strings that are excited by electromagnets with an alternating magnetic field1. the quiet, tiny movements of the strings are reminiscent of the ghostly sounds of aeolian harps excited by the wind. the instruments play a piece, or rather the skeleton of a piece, composed of long and slow pitch movements. this piece colours the space and provides an entry point as well as a supportive atmosphere for the participants.
the skeleton is notated in the books that are given to the participants. in addition to the notation, these books also contain text and image quotations that convey contexts, thoughts and atmospheres.
the chinese word gǎnyìng is translated as either resonance or magnetic induction. this double meaning indicates a close relationship between the two terms: in both induction and resonance, two fields tune into each other without touching.↩︎
